Welcome to the former base of the Romans on the Danube, with the supposed historical goal of opening up the northern lands of the ancient Roman Empire. At the start of your bike tour, the local Storks will let you know everything you need to know about the Donau-Ries district from their box seats on the roof of the Holy Cross Monastery. They will also reveal the most secluded places at the confluence of the Danube and Wörnitz, where an historic landing stage at the old Danube port is a reminder of its former importance for shipping on the Danube.

Your first cycling day is characterized by the Danube-Lech floodplain with its wide-ranging river arms, glacial valleys and biotic wetlands. The cycle path meanders sometimes along the mighty Lech River sometimes through eagerly cultivated pastureland where the young seedlings of the gugguruz indulge in the rising sun. Soon you reach the former Roman provincial city of Augusta Vindelicorum - Augsburg, whose economic importance sprouted in antiquity and gained influence with the lucrative relations of the rich Fugger trading family.

Enriched by the experiences of the historic city of Augsburg, you cycle today on flat terrain, first through the Augsburg city forest and on through the natural paradise Lechtalheiden, which presents itself as a refuge for rare animals and plants. The light forest around the decorative Lech weir in Landsberg offers relaxing places to rest and relax as you see the colourful ensemble of houses, whose faces are gently reflected in the evening sun.

The Pfaffenwinkel region - the water-rich heart of Bavaria - accompanies you today on your way to the picturesque old town of Schongau. Numerous monasteries line this path and in the distance the imposing silhouette of the approaching Alps can already be seen. This former trading town also boasts an almost completely preserved city wall to complete the scene.

Today the Lech River accompanies you directly to the Forggenstausee, on the ground which the ancient route of the Via Claudia Augusta runs. Nestled in a natural paradise of well-known mountain chains and idyllic lakes, Füssen welcomes you, also known as the European cradle of lute makers. The high castle rises above the medieval city centre with its unique illusion painting in the magnificent inner courtyard. And it is not only in the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein that King Ludwig’s flair indulges in the Füssen air.
