Tyrolean Gasthaus Culture by bike
An epicurean journey along the Inn river bicycle path
The Tyrolean Gasthaus Culture’s basic elements are simply the love for regional Tyrolean food, waters and forests; the use of local agricultural products; as well as turning peoples’ attentions to architecture and authentic atmosphere.
The main focus lies in fostering the gastronomical culture of the region and lovingly and committedly preserving its characteristics for the future.
The ways to do so are uncountable. Whether having “Graukas und Bier” at a small getaway Gasthaus at the edge of the forest or a 5 course meal at a gourmet restaurant, the broad array of elements unique to Tyrolean heritage and culture are on display.
Enjoy a varied bicycle route along the Inn river in combination with numerous partner locales that will give you a closer understanding of Tyrol via a culinary approach.
Features
Mostly flat cycling sections along the Tyrolean Inntal (small climbs between Zams and Haiming); possibility to visit a Schnaps distillery in Telfs.
Individual single bookings available – 6 days / 5 nights, approximately 150 km.
Program
Day 1: Individual arrival at Stams/Landeck
Strolling through small town Zams will give you a wonderful impression of the Tyrolean mountains. Social loafing or a small cultural trip (visiting Schloss Landeck) are ways to explore the lively district capital Landeck. Long ago, the town used to be the main spot of travel supervision across the Arlberg and Reschen pass.
Day 2: Zams/Landeck – Flauring (approx. 45 km)
After a traditional Tyrolean snack the first stage will take you to Telfs. Along the way you will experience the uniqueness of the Oberland countryside. Even today, the high peaks and steep rugged cliffs close to the softly rolling cycling path shape Tyroleans’ way of life. The Schnaps distillery Ziesele is one of the special features along the stage and is a welcoming place for every guest. A guided distillery tour followed by Schnaps tasting will allow an interesting glimpse into the art of ‘burning’ Schnaps. Cheers!
Day 3: Flaurling – Innsbruck (approx. 28 km)
The gentle and flat cycling path follows the river flow to Innsbruck passing the ruin of Fragenstein in Zirl. Remote small towns with exemplary traditional Tyrolean inns are located along the route. Strolling through Innsbruck, its fascinating old town, neat Burghäuser, tight alleyways and the towering mountain backdrop won’t fail to impress. Innsbruck offers, besides various architectural and cultural highlights, uncountable delicacies in sophisticated Tyrolean inns that have been preserved their original status over decades.
Day 4: Innsbruck – Stans (approx. 32 km)
Leaving Innsbruck you will get into Wattens via Hall. There, the world famous Swarovski Crystal Worlds are waiting to win your heart. Right after visiting the world of glitter and sparkling crystals the flow of the cycling path along the river will take you into the small silver mining town Schwaz and finally into Stans.
Day 5: Stans Kufstein (approx. 48 km)
After a short stop in the historical glassblowing town Rattenberg, the cycling stage of the day will take you into Kufstein. Even before entering town, the view on the impressive fortress located on an exposed rock formation will speak for itself. Enjoy Kufstein’s authentic feel and the delicious food served at the Tyrolean Gasthaus “Auracher Löchl”.
The town’s nickname “The pearl of Tyrol” originates from the world famous “Kufsteiner Lied” composed by Karl Ganzer within the four walls of this very Gasthaus. This known and following the traces of Kustein’s history, it is also the perfect time to sit together at the last day of your Tyrolean Gasthaus tour and pitch in a few lines of the song: “Kennst du die Perle, die Perle Tirols…”
